How did Antonio Brown get frostbite?

How did Antonio Brown get frostbite? Man talking about Antonio Brown.
Cryotherapy Dangers in the National Spotlight. ABC News.

How did Antonio Brown get frostbite? 2019 was a rough year for Antonio Brown on and off the field. He underwent a cryotherapy session in France and suffered frostbite on his feet. This event took him out of the game and brought cryotherapy back to center stage. How did this happen, and was it preventable?

Antonio Brown got frostbite on accident

Antonio Brown’s frostbite was an accident, that much is clear. The cryotherapy community experienced a lot of negative attention after this happened. Everyone who enjoys cryotherapy knows that every session must include proper protection. Firstly, this is usually thick slippers and gloves for head-out chambers and slippers, gloves, earmuffs, and a mask for walk-in chambers. Secondly, blood vessels and skin in the hands, feet, ears, and lips is sensitive and can be damaged by the sub-zero cold temperatures.

Can I wear thick socks?

Antonio Brown reported wearing socks in the chamber, but he also had just finished a workout. Antonio Brown exercises harder than most, and his socks absorbed a lot of sweat. In my own experience I have always worn socks and slippers (along with gloves), but I do not think that even thick dry socks offer enough protection. Why? Socks are knitted and even thick socks have holes. That is how they stretch to fit our feet. Slippers have multiple layers of fabric and padding that insulate the feet. Remember: cryotherapy has temperatures lower than anything ever recorded on Earth. Slippers and gloves and all other personal protection equipment is required for a reason.

Take a nurse’s advice

As a nurse practitioner I see the good and bad of every hospital patient. Those that heal faster and live a better life are those that follow healthy advice. Cryotherapy is a healthy option for athletic recovery and for stimulating adipose tissue browning, and elevating your metabolism. Make sure to wear ALL protective equipment, especially thick slippers and gloves. I wear my own socks because I don’t want my feet in the slippers everyone wears, but I always check to make sure my soles and toes are dry. I would rather take off wet socks and wear dry slippers–even if someone else has worn them–than suffer an injury to my feet.

Cryo Innovations XR vs Impact Elite Cryosauna

Cryo Innovations XR with door open man standing inside
The XR by Cryo Innovations

Cryotherapy leads the way in revolutionary and popular recovery modes. For a healthy lifestyle today how do you know which cryotherapy chamber is right for your clients? We compare two: a new technologically advanced chamber and an old standby. Both incorporate popular features. This blog will hopefully help you choose the best way to provide healthy recovery options in your spa, gym or medical office.

Let’s take a look at two popular cryotherapy options that are both made in the USA: the Cryo Innovations XR and the Impact Cryosauna.

Safety First:

Cryo Innovations XR offers state-of-the-art technology including multiple sensors and a “no-fail” security system in their cryotherapy chamber.

  • Two fingerprint authorizations for operation. Technicians must touch the screen every 30 seconds for it to continue in the ‘on’ mode.
  • Head Sensor – this ensures that if a user’s head falls below the line the cryo chamber will shut down.
  • Onboard O2 sensors
  • Pulse oxygen reader to monitor oxygen levels while standing in the chamber
  • Built- in skin temperature sensor
  • Thermal imaging camera to ensure temperatures are safe and even
  • Door safety that never locks. If it is leaned on, the door opens.
  • Emergency button and shut off are available to the technician and the user, allowing either to shut it off instantly.
  • Cordura® Military grade anti-microbial, tear-proof, waterproof fabric, hand crafted for all interior panels. (Used by Nike and Space-X.)

Impact Elite Cryosauna offers classic technology and American workmanship in their cryotherapy sauna.

Impact Elite Cryosauna with door closed
The Impact
  • “Smart Sauna” software that allows for direct monitoring for the cryotherapy specialist operating the machine.
  • Simplified user interface with built-in safety protocols and has earned an independent laboratory ETL Mark for safety.
  • Technician has all the safety features at their fingertips. An instructor teaches a course Impact calls “Whole Body Cryotherapy Operator Training: Safety is Essential,” at the installation of your cryosauna.
  • Onboard O2 sensors
  • Adjustable height riser system so users are always elevated correctly for their size within the chamber.
  • Acrylic interior panels – to ensure the cleanliness of the chamber and the health of users.

These both offer state of the art technology with safety as a top feature. Having the ability for the user to be in control within the Cryo Innovations XR is unique. We found comfort in being able to shut down the chamber or simply lean on the door to open it. It also felt good knowing that the interior shape of the XR will pop the door open if someone collapsed for any reason (it is a slight inverted cone shape). The Impact Elite Cryosauna has an adjustable floor that ensures the user’s head is in the exact position above the nitrogen, and this is a good safety feature.

Along with the safety features of both chambers the technology of each is critically important to safety and operational ease. Both companies offer training to their buyers, so technicians are well prepared for operation. Both are nitrogen cooled and are made in the USA. The Cryo Innovations XR has a smaller footprint at 44″ x 34.” The Impact Cryosauna is 72″ x 36.” Each offers a warranty: one year with Impact, and three years with Cryo Innovations. Impact has a vapor delivery system to regulate the flow. Cryo Innovations has a proprietary Cyclone Flow Technology of less than 3 liters of nitrogen per session.

The looks and structure of both chambers offer aesthetics that can suit any office or venue. Each has their own unique design. Impact offers a laser cut aluminum structure. The Cryo Innovations model has glowing blue LED lighting that adds to any aesthetic. The XR is also highly mobile with locking wheels.

Financing a cryotherapy sauna

financing a cryotherapy sauna and financing a cryotherapy chamber
Don’t let hesitation freeze your ambitions.

Cryosaunas are not cheap, so for many it comes down to financing a cryotherapy suana. This is common in the recovery industry. Small business owners may not have the cash on hand to buy a sauna outright. For most entrepreneurs the fastest way to a cryotherapy startup is financing a cryotherapy sauna.

What are the steps to financing a cryotherapy sauna?

Financing a cryotherapy sauna is easier than you think. While small business loans may not approve for a cryosauna there are other options. Cryotherapy has a small but dedicated group of lenders who will finance your cryosauna and who understand your needs. This niche market developed because of entrepreneurs such as yourself. Cryotherapy is an entirely new market that is expected to exceed 5 billion dollars by 2025. Many people are sprinting to become the first cryotherapy business in their area, and small banks are noticing.

Do I need really good credit?

The terms for financing a cryosauna are about the same as other small business loans. For most cryotherapy manufacturers you will need to show 1 year of being in business, a personal FICO score no lower than 650, and reserved funds in a company bank account. If you can meet those requirements you can get financed quickly.

Is financing a smart option?

Everyone wishes they had an unlimited source of funding, but the reality is that most entrepreneurs do not. In fact, one estimate of new startups measured that over 90% of entrepreneurs use other people’s money. The estimate also noted that most loans are paid off earlier than expected. This is because the entrepreneur is highly motivated to make the business work, and that inner drive is what makes it a success.

How many people are under a finance plan?

About 25% of new cryosauna owners receive financing, and surprisingly they are often those who are more successful in the long run. Part of that success is the fact that a cryosauna begins making a profit almost instantly. The other part of that is hard work. If you need financing it means that you are serious about your business, and if you have been in business for over a year then you are on your way to success.

Concerns

Both cabins use electric lift platforms that adjust to account for the height of the client. These systems have one drawback: they break. Fixing a broken lift platform requires a dismantling of the cabin and a waiting period for parts. European systems require international shipping for any broken lifts. Advanced systems, such as Cryo Innovation’s XR Cryochamber use non-mechanical lifts that cannot break: sturdy pads that are stackable for the client to stand on (visible in the photograph here). Sometimes simple is better, especially when a spa has to cancel appointments due to a broken lift.

Electric Lifts In Common

Both cabins use electric lift platforms that adjust to account for the height of the client. These systems have one drawback: they break. Fixing a broken lift platform requires a dismantling of the cabin and a waiting period for parts. Finland’s system requires international shipping for any broken lifts. Advanced systems, such as Cryo Innovations XR Cryochamber use non-mechanical lifts that cannot break: sturdy pads that are stackable for the client to stand on. Sometimes simple is better, especially when a spa has to cancel appointments due to a broken lift.

Pricing Comparisons

Titan’s sales team quoted this writer with a price of $65,600. Cryo°Cabin quoted $39,000 for their Standard model, with $1,300 shipping.

Contacting the Manufacturer – Easy or Not?

Cryotech in Finland has one drawback: they are in Finland, which is 7 hours ahead of New York, and 10 hours ahead of California. Their website does not list a phone number of anyone to call, not even a service center. Upon filling out the webform to ask how to buy a chamber Cryotech took two days to respond with an email stating that their sales team would respond in a day. They do have suppliers and resellers of their products in the United States; however, those distributors also have to contact Finland in the event there is a problem. Geographically Finland’s closest neighbors are Russia and Estonia, and while Finland is politically distinct from both the shipping distances from Finland and Russia are similar.

Titan Cryo was easier to reach, although contacting them through the phone number listed on their website led to Google Voice. This resulted in a low-quality call and concerns for the stability of the business. In a spirit of fairness we called this number 3 different times from different numbers throughout the work week. All calls resulted in call-forwarding through Google Voice to personal cell phone or laptop. Most professional cryotherapy companies, spas, and gyms invest in normal phone services.

A Misleading Safety Claim

cryotechnordic.com
Screenshot: CryoTechNordic.com

Upon investigation both the Cryo°Cabin™ and Titan failed in our comparison for a significant reason: their websites both claim that the cabins are in some way certified by Underwriter Laboratories, the global safety certification organization. Titan’s website claims that their Cryo Cabin™ is the “only Cryo Cabin in the world tested and certified to UL standards,” and touts their cabin as having “The most experience and safety.” Cryotech Nordic Cryo°Cabin’s™ website claims that it is “100% CE/UL certified.” While both cabins appear safe these statements are concerning as they purport to assure the user of an additional layer of safety that is only available in their product.

UL has not certified either cabin, only the electronic components purchased by the companies to use in the cabin (e.g., electrical box). This is not special: all electronic components in all consumer machines must be certified by UL to be sold in the United States.

The Ultimate Whole Body Cryotherapy Machine Purchase Guide

Cryotherapy has emerged to be one of the most trending businesses around the globe. With various business startups, several existing businesses have incorporated whole body cryotherapy to increase their revenue. With the whole influx in the cryotherapy business, there is a need for one to pay particular attention to the durability of the machine, the safety of users, performance and cost when purchasing the machine. Taking these into consideration gives you a chance to make a perfect purchase.

Are you an aspiring cryotherapy owner? Do you wish to start a cryotherapy business? Have you heard and wish to broaden your idea on the subject line under review? Before we can discuss the factors to consider when buying this kind of a machine, we would like to highlight two different types of Whole Body Cryotherapy machines which include:

Cryosauna

This cabin is mainly for one person in which the patient is immersed in the cold vapors up to the arms level and breathes air from the room with the head located outside the reach of extremely low temperatures. The machine uses liquid nitrogen to generate the coolant.  The cryosauna has many merits which include low cost of use, easy installation and good contact with the patient. It also allows the use of cryo-stimulation by a person who has claustrophobia. The Impact Cryotherapy machine bears the ETL mark from Intertek, a sign that it meets safety standards. This machine has different features including custom-built software design for safety, anti-microbial cryogenic interior panels, patent-pending vapor delivery system, unique and stable design, and an adjustable height riser platform.

Cryochamber

The chamber consists of two antechambers with a temperature of -10 degrees Celsius and 60 degrees Celsius, and the chamber proper with a temperature of about -100 degrees Celsius. The advantages of a cryochamber are that the chamber is isolated from the ground so it can be easily installed either indoors or outdoors. The cryochamber has all the elements necessary for the safe performance of cryostimulation, which are an additional emergency exit, visual and audio contact with the operator. More importantly, the chamber is used in group therapy.

Moving ahead, we would like now to explain the factors our valuable customers need to take into account before buying the machines:

Depreciation

Depreciation is an accounting term which describes the cost allocations of an asset to its useful life. The more durable the chamber is the higher its quality as it can meet its specific purpose. Depreciation, mostly since it is mathematical cost allocation, doesn’t have a direct correlation to the asset’s physical life.

Depreciation for machinery, like whole body cryotherapy machine and equipment appraisers, has an entirely different meaning. For machinery, depreciation is the estimated loss in value due to its loss in value of an asset; this may be due to economic obsolescence, functional obsolescence, or physical deterioration, or a combination of all of them.

The cryotherapy chambers can work for up to 10 years since they have no moving parts. There are however other mobile Cryotherapy machines, but that does not take much from their lifespan as they are both regularly upgraded, with hardware being replaced from time to time. Automated software updates are done over the air and ensure that your unit has the most recent bug fixes and improvement available. The physical upgrades are done by a kit that is sent to the owner. Sensors are USB terminated and can be replaced within a few short minutes.

When speaking of depreciation and Cryo machines, what becomes imperative to mention is the price at which the owner of such a machine can resell his or her product at a future date. There are multiple prize tags for different machines, depending on how much they would have depreciated and the time that they would have been in use. This is so as depreciation can be measured in terms of how much a machine has worn out, or in terms of how long has the machine been in use. However, we ought to consider the facts on how the Cryo machines are updated regularly using both software and hardware that is sent to the owner by the suppliers. These regular checks keep the machines performing at their best throughout their economic lives.

Some machines come at a high quality, therefore leading to longer lifespans (meaning can be sold at a higher value after a few years of utilizing it) and some come with low quality, and this can sometimes be revealed in the price at which the seller is charging when it is still new and unused. Considering the facts around pricing and quality, the price also becomes an essential factor to consider when purchasing a cryo chamber.  The cryo machines have different prices depending on different features the machine comes with, and these factors may determine how fast, or slow your machine depreciates. They can be as low as USD 29,000.00 and as high as up to US$70,000.00.

Eve as we have mentioned the importance of looking at the price of the machine before making a purchase, the price alone cannot be the determining feature but collectively with other factors such as depreciation (durability), efficiency, safety and support, facility development and the profitability one can get out of the cryo machines.

Safety and support

The safety of a customer is of the utmost importance when dealing with temperatures as low as 220 degrees F. Investing in the safety protects your customers thereby reducing your liabilities in the medium to long-run. Some chambers have 8+ onboard sensors ensuring the maximum safety of customers. They also use liquid nitrogen because it is the most effective method in delivering cold therapy – as with liquid nitrogen, we reach maximum cold temperatures. The technology of the chamber allows for six different temperatures, evenly distributing nitrogen to the unit. The machine only runs when specific safety criteria are reached, thereby reducing liability. This delivers the most effective experience and at the same time allowing secure and profitable sessions. On the other hand, some other machines have a safe, smart and engage software for the safety of customers and also the need to consider a safety training program for the cryotherapy operators before purchasing the cryo machines.

Efficiency

When purchasing the cryo machine, one has to consider its efficiency.  Some have a modular design for ease of service. The inclusion of a multilevel heat exchange which improves nitrogen efficiency is also one thing that needs to be a consideration.

Facility Development

There is a need to ensure that one has the required space before buying the cryo chamber. To achieve this, you have to check your local codes so that they can see if there may be any legal restrictions for the service. The mostly recommended room size for some chambers is 10’ x 10’. The units and its nitrogen dewars take up an area of 5’x5’. The room can be smaller if the nitrogen dewars are stored in a separate room connected through the wall. Facility development is a priority as it constitutes one of the features the buyer has to consider before purchasing a cryo machine.

Profitability

To realize high returns, there is a need for reducing the level of liability and most importantly, cut expenses. This is the only way to archive the highest return on investment possible.  Buying the right cryotherapy chamber guarantees meeting these goals. There need to check the level of energy efficiency and performance that the machine can offer to be the most profitable in the industry.

The Effect of Whole Body Cryotherapy on Inflammation

Whole Body Cryotherapy (WBC) has become increasingly popular in sports medicine and popular culture. Many professional athletes and celebrities use WBC to “enhance recovery after injuries and to counteract inflammatory symptoms resulting from overuse or pathology”.

Whole Body Cryotherapy Induces Anti-Inflammatory Effects

A study of 69 physically active male subjects (including 10 professional rugby players and 39 healthy individuals) that were treated with 30 cryo sessions lasting 2 and a half minutes each, resulted in several new findings [1].

One of the notable findings was that WBC induces anti-inflammatory effects. Findings show that WBC stimulates the anti-inflammatory response while also noting that the fitness capacity of each individual affects the inflammatory response to WBC in non-athletes (the physical condition of participants had a direct effect on the magnitude of the benefits received).

The study also calls for further investigations to focus on establishing, whether reduced inflammation has a beneficial effect on athletes’ performance if training was to be combined with cold therapy.
